- The Great Republic is a self-unloading bulk carrier, designed to haul taconite pellets (iron ore concentrate) on the Great Lakes.
- The Great Republic was originally designed to maneuver on the winding Cuyahoga River and remains today as one of the maneuverable ships in the world.
- Still in operation today, it primarily sails between Lorain, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio, navigating the Cuyahoga River.
- In 1996, the Olympic Flame was carried about the Great Republic as it traveled from Detroit, MI to Cleveland, OH.
